My Journey to Health and Fitness
For years, I struggled with my weight. The first time I decided to lose weight, I weighed around 90 kg. I went on a strict diet and focused solely on cardio, losing 30 kg in six months. I was thrilled to reach my goal weight, but I hadn’t developed the habits necessary for long-term weight maintenance.
Gradually, I slipped back into old habits, and my weight began to creep up again. My mental health deteriorated, and I turned to food and alcohol for comfort. Every day after work, I would sit outside, drink, smoke, and binge eat, convincing myself that one bad day wouldn’t hurt. But those days added up.
When COVID-19 hit, things worsened. The world shut down, and we had to isolate at home for three months. During that time, I ate, drank, smoked, and sat around, becoming increasingly depressed and anxious.
In March 2021, I stepped on the scale and saw 101.1 kg. I went back on a diet and started walking regularly. A trip to Sydney and some professional photos taken at the aquarium served as a wake-up call. Seeing those photos made me feel ashamed and disgusted with myself. In April 2021, I began searching for women’s-only gyms, feeling too frightened and ashamed to join a regular gym. I found an amazing gym called Samsara, where I felt supported from the moment I joined. I got a personal trainer, and Samsara conducted an InBody scan every six weeks. When I started, I weighed 96.3 kg, with 44.6 kg of body fat, 28.6 kg of muscle, and a body fat percentage of 46.3%.
I committed to my journey, going to the gym five days a week, focusing on strength training and some cardio. I also changed my eating habits, making more mindful food choices and incorporating all my macros. I started eating breakfast and cut down on drinking, opting for bourbon with Pepsi Max instead of regular Coke. It took time for my body to adjust, and for the first six weeks, I had one personal training session and went to the gym after work instead of drinking. Six weeks later, another InBody scan showed I was 90.6 kg. I had lost 9 kg of body fat and gained 650 grams of muscle. I started feeling more confident and attended my first class, Barre, which I loved.
As I continued, I learned that consistency in eating and training is key to long-term weight loss. In 2022, I began participating in challenges to stay motivated, completing seven that year. My passion for fitness and nutrition grew, leading me to earn my Cert III and IV in Fitness and Nutrition Coaching.
Fast forward to October 2024, I now weigh 71 kg, with 16 kg of body fat, 31.2 kg of muscle, and a body fat percentage of 22.3%. My mental health has significantly improved, and I feel more confident and stronger. I couldn’t have achieved this long-term success without the support I’ve received.
